Grace Watts
Grace Watts creates dynamic compositions in oil, acrylic and graphite on canvas. Her pieces are inspired by a philosophy of self evolution, and many begin with a period of focused research into philosophical texts: “I find a passage that resonates and interpret it as a symbol of growth. I then take the symbol from the writing, and use it as a narrative for the work,” says Watts. “Self awareness is the most important knowledge there is. Hilma af Klint explored similar ideas: she pioneered visualising the importance of the soul in her work, and steering one’s own direction.”
Watts studied graphic communication at university and subsequently pursued a career in graphic design and art direction. Much of her work explores a textural depth, arising from her interest in modernist interiors investigated in her parallel photography practice. “These other skill sets often inform the feel of a particular piece and the spaces they go into,” she says. “I love that the canvases sometimes look a bit worn, like they are already lived in. The multitude of layers allows for a lingering aspect to the painting – I find there is visual richness in things which aren’t entirely pristine.”
