Andrea Walsh

Working in ceramics, glass and metal, Andrea Walsh creates objects that celebrate the ancient and alchemical qualities of her materials. She works by hand, combining traditional techniques such as lost wax casting with a variety of heat processes to produce delicate forms that highlight the purity, clarity and translucency of her material.

Walsh studied fine art before a masters degree in glass, and set up her studio in 2005. Her work is included in private and public collections worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and National Museums Scotland in Edinburgh. She was selected as a finalist in the BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour Craft Prize 2017, and the LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize in 2019. She lives and works in East Lothian, Scotland.

“I am fascinated by materials: by their inherent characteristics and symbolism, and the historic associations and familiarity they signify,” she says. By exploring ideas of containment and value through her considered, tactile objects, she prompts viewers to engage in a spontaneous interaction with her work. “I seek to make pieces that embrace investigation through their intimate scale, to be contemplated, held, and cherished.”
